Hydraulic System Informational Series - Hoses

Part three of the information series on hydraulic systems. Today’s topic is hose.

If the pump is the heart of the hydraulic system, the hoses are the blood vessels.  Hoses are not tricky to figure out, but it can sometimes be difficult to decide what kind of hose to get.  You’ll want to make sure that the hose you buy will comfortable tolerate both the constant pressure of fluid and the pulse force in some applications.  Agristore USA’s hoses will tolerate up to 4800 PSI of constant pressure but are not recommended for high pulse force applications.

Another characteristic of hoses is the number of layers of wire reinforcement.  Agristore USA’s hoses are 2-wire allowing for increased PSI at the cost of some flexibility.  The 1-wire hoses are the most flexible but are generally rated at a lower PSI. 8-wire hoses can withstand intense pulse forces but are barely flexible.

The third thing to check is the temperature rating of the hose. Most hose, including Agristore USA’s, is rated for temperatures up to 100°C or 212°F. If your system is running hotter oil, make sure to get hose rated at 300°F or higher. To view our hydraulic hose listings, click here.

Hydraulic System Informational Series - Pumps

Part two of the informational series on hydraulic systems. Today’s topic is hydraulic pumps.

Hydraulic pumps, sometimes called hydraulic motors, are usually powered by a PTO connection from the back of a tractor. Some pumps dead end the PTO connection while others provide extensions to implements. When the power from the tractor is transferred from the PTO to the pump, it creates the driving force on the hydraulic fluid that allows it to move cylinders and attachments. Most tractor pumps operate in an open system, which means that the fluid behind the pump is kept at atmospheric pressure. The hydraulic fluid is exposed in some way to the air and the pump provides all of the necessary power to move the fluid.

Agristore USA offers the Hydraulic PTO Tractor Pump. The distinguishing features between the five different pumps are the implement end and the output ratio. You can get 1-3/8” male or female on the implement side and the ratios come in 1 : 3, 1 : 3.5 and 1 : 3.8. For Agristore USA’s PTO pumps, click here.

Hydraulic System Informational Series - Reservoirs

Today kicks off an informational series on hydraulic systems. I'm going to take you through one of the most important systems on a tractor step-by-step and explain each part along the way.

Let's start with the hydraulic fluid reservoir. It's basically an oil tank that allows a surplus of fluid to provide constant output throughout the system. Without the reservoir, the system could only store enough oil to go through once and any leakages would cause immediate interruptions in output.

The size of the tank will depend on the size and output of the hydraulic pump you need to power your attachments.

Is it a right-hand blade or a left-hand blade?

When ordering tiller blades, it's important to keep in mind that there are actually two different blades on a tiller: a right-hand blade and a left-hand blade. How do you know which is which?

Step 1: Remove the tiller blade from the tiller.

Step 2: Hold the tine so that it dangles from the bolt holes.

Step 3: Holding the blade in front of you, turn it so that the cutting edge faces you. If the blade curves to the left, it's a left-hand blade. If it curves to the right, it's a right-hand blade.

The blade pictured above is a left-hand blade.

BSP to NPT adapters for Hydraulic Top Link Cylinders

Hydaulic Top Links make it easy to attach your 3-point implement and make adjustments directly from the driver’s seat, saving time and increasing productivity.

Agristore USA currently stocks both Category 1, 2, and 3 hydraulic top link cylinders with standard double-piloted check valves.  These check valves are a safety feature designed to keep the cylinder locked in position and prevent drift.  The hydraulic top links we carry have British Standard Pipe (BSP) threads in the ports.  BSP is the standard pipe threading worldwide, with the exception of the United States, which uses primarily National Pipe Thread (NPT). Because of this, all of our hydraulic top link cylinders include two BSP to NPT adapters (3/8” male to male), unless the cylinder is purchased with our nesting Hydraulic Hose Kits, in which case no adapters are needed.  Please note that BSP to NPT adapters must be used when attaching a pre-existing NPT hose kit from your tractor to our hydraulic top links.

Check out our online catalog at www.agristoreusa.com for more information on the hydraulic top link cylinders, hose kits, and adapters we carry.

Have questions about hydraulic top links or still can’t find the one you need? We want to hear from you.  Contact us today at 317-329-5080 with your request.

Choosing The Right Trimmer Head

With all of the replacement trimmer heads on the market today, finding the right one for your trimmer can be overwhelming.  But it doesn’t have to be.  This simple, 2-step guide will help you determine which trimmer head is right for your application.

Step 1)  Determine Compatibility

The most important step in choosing a replacement trimmer head is determining which one is compatible with your existing trimmer.  In order for a replacement trimmer head to fit properly, its center bolt (also known as the arbor bolt) must be compatible with the corresponding bolt on the trimmer.  Compatibility is determined by 3 different criteria:  bolt dimensions, rotation, and gender.

Dimensions:   The center bolt of the trimmer head should have the same diameter and thread count as the trimmer bolt. When using the metric system, the critical measurements are bolt diameter in millimeters and the thread width in millimeters (ex. 10mm x 1mm).  When using the U.S. standard system, the critical measurements are bolt diameter in inches and the number of threads per inch (ex. 5/16” x 24).

Rotation:   The directional spin of the trimmer head should always be the same as that of the trimmer.   If the directional spin of the trimmer is to the left, the spin of the trimmer head should also be to the left.  If the directional spin of the trimmer is to the right, the spin of the trimmer head should also be to the right.

Gender:  The gender of your trimmer head bolt should be opposite that of your trimmer.  So, if your trimmer’s bolt is female, be sure to choose a trimmer head with a male center bolt.  If your trimmer’s bolt is male, be sure to choose a trimmer head with a female center bolt.

These three attributes will usually be clearly marked on the trimmer head packaging.  For example, 10mm x 1.25mm LHM indicates an arbor bolt with a 10mm diameter, 1.25mm thread width, Left Hand rotation, and Male gender.

Today, many trimmer heads are universal, meaning they fit on most trimmer makes/models, either straight off the shelf or with the help of adapters.  Manufacturers of replacement trimmer heads may also place labels on packaging with cross references to original equipment parts, simplifying the process even more.

Step 2)  Choose Your Features

Trimmer head manufacturers offer a variety of ease-of-use features to appeal to consumers. These features usually pertain to how the trimmer line is installed and how the line is dispensed during operation.  A common frustration among users is manually replacing broken line caused by trimming alongside fences, concrete, rocks, and walls.  To remedy this, some trimmer heads feature a system designed to automatically feed new line after it breaks.  Other trimmer heads feed new line through a simple tap of the trimmer head on the ground (often called “bump feed” or “tap n’ go”).   Convenience factors such as these save time and help you get the job done quicker.

If you’re on the market for a replacement trimmer head, AgristoreUSA carries both professional-grade and DIY-grade trimmer heads for nearly all makes and models.  Visit our web site and search the master chart, or call us at 317.329.5080 and allow our friendly sales team to assist you.
